Place your first hay bale onto the empty plot of land.

Set down your second hay bale diagonally in relation to the first hay bale. It should look like you are starting a checkerboard pattern.

Place your third hay bale so it's side by side the first hay bale. Do the same with the last hay bale only on the opposite side. You should now have three hay bales forming a kind of 'V' and another hay bale that looks like it's sitting on top of them (even though it's not actually touching them)

Voila! It looks like you have "stacked" your hay bales.
